Discount Calculator
Enter a price and a discount percentage to see exactly what comes off and what you actually pay. Works with any currency — rupees, dollars, pounds — because it only deals with the numbers.
Instant result as you type
The currency selector only changes the symbol — no exchange rates are applied.
How to Use
- Type the original price into the first box.
- Type the discount percentage into the second box.
- The amount saved and the final price appear immediately, with a sentence explaining the result.
- Use Clear to reset both boxes.
Features
- Both numbers shown — the amount you save and the price you pay, not just one of them.
- Currency-agnostic — enter plain numbers and read the answer in whatever currency you are working in.
- Two decimal places — results are formatted like money rather than as long decimals.
- Input validation — negative prices and discounts above 100% are caught and explained instead of producing nonsense.
- Handles fractional discounts — 12.5% works as well as 10%.
- Instant — no calculate button; results update as you type.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate a discount manually?
Multiply the price by the discount percentage and divide by 100 to get the saving, then subtract it from the price. A 30% discount on 2,000 is 600 off, so you pay 1,400.
How do I work out the original price from a sale price?
This tool goes the other way, so do it in reverse: divide the sale price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). A price of 1,400 after 30% off means 1,400 ÷ 0.7 = 2,000. We may add this as a mode later.
Are two discounts of 20% the same as 40% off?
No, and this is the most common shopping mistake. Two successive 20% discounts leave you paying 64% of the original price, which is 36% off in total, not 40%. The second discount applies to the already-reduced price.
Does this include tax or GST?
No. It calculates the discount on the number you enter. If your price excludes tax, the result will also exclude tax — add it afterwards.
Is my data stored?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser. No prices, numbers or inputs are uploaded or logged.
