Free Gemini for Pakistani Students: What Happens After the Free Year

Free Gemini for Pakistani students is real. Eligible university students can get Google AI Plus — Google’s paid Gemini plan — free for one year. The last day to claim it is 31 December 2026. But two things decide whether it stays free, and most guides skip both. You add a payment method when you sign up, and Google charges it automatically when your free year ends. And if you store more than the free 15 GB at that point, your Gmail can stop receiving email.

What Is the Google AI Plus Student Offer?

Google AI Plus is a paid Google subscription. It gives you higher Gemini usage limits and extra cloud storage for Gmail, Drive and Photos. Google announced a free year of Google AI for college students in more than 140 markets. Google leaves out only a few markets: the United States, Canada, Albania, Bolivia, Hong Kong, Macau and Tunisia. Pakistan is not one of them.

Local coverage of the Pakistan launch reports the student plan as including higher Gemini limits and 400 GB of shared storage. But Google sells AI Plus in more than one storage size. Check the offer page to see exactly what your plan includes.

Which Pakistani Students Can Get Free Gemini

According to Google One Help, you need to be a student at a higher-education institution in a supported country. SheerID, a verification service Google uses, checks your student status. Google also says you must meet its minimum age requirement.

  • Enrolled at a university or college — students below degree level may not qualify.
  • A personal Google account in your own name, which Google requires for AI Plus.
  • Proof of current enrolment, in case automatic verification does not go through. SheerID tells you which documents it accepts.
  • A payment method Google accepts, which you add at sign-up even though you pay nothing in the first year.

How Pakistani Students Can Claim Free Gemini

  1. Sign in to the personal Google account you plan to keep long-term. Your storage and files will live here.
  2. Open Google’s student offer page and choose the Google AI Plus student offer.
  3. Complete SheerID verification. If SheerID cannot verify your university automatically, upload a clear document that proves your current enrolment.
  4. Add a payment method when asked — but read the next section before you confirm.
  5. Once it is active, open your subscription settings and note the exact date the free year ends.

The Part Most Guides Skip: Automatic Renewal

Sign up, twelve months free, then the plan renews on its own

This is a free year, not free forever. Google’s student offer terms are clear about it. When the free year ends, Google charges your payment method the standard monthly price for your country. It keeps charging you every month until you cancel. To avoid that, cancel before the free year runs out. For Pakistani students, free Gemini only stays free if you cancel in time.

Google’s announcement puts the price after the free period at $4.99 a month or the local-currency equivalent. One Pakistani outlet reported the local price as PKR 1,400 a month. Your checkout screen shows the exact rupee amount for your account — trust that, not any article, because prices change.

A year is a long time to remember a renewal date. Sign up in September 2026, and the first charge arrives in September 2027. That is likely mid-semester, on a card you may have forgotten about.

Google AI Pro vs Google AI Plus: Two Different Offers

If you remember a free Google AI Pro plan for Pakistani students, you are not imagining it. Google announced a free one-year AI Pro plan for students in Pakistan in October 2025. That was a separate, earlier offer, and reports indicate its sign-up window has since closed in most regions.

The offer you can claim now, announced in August 2026, is for Google AI Plus — a different plan. Many older articles and videos still describe the AI Pro offer. Their features and storage figures may not match what you get. When a guide and Google’s offer page disagree, go with the offer page.

What Happens to Your Gmail and Files When the Year Ends

Going over the free 15 GB Google storage limit makes new emails bounce back to the sender
Over the 15 GB limit, new emails bounce back to the sender

This is the risk almost nobody mentions to Pakistani students signing up for free Gemini. Every Google account gets 15 GB of free storage shared across Gmail, Drive and Photos. During the offer you get much more. The trouble starts if you fill that extra space and then stop paying.

Google’s cancellation help page explains what happens if you cancel while using more than the default storage. Gmail stops sending and receiving messages, and mail sent to you bounces back to the sender. You also cannot upload or sync new files in Drive or back up photos. Its storage help page goes further. If you stay over the limit for two years, Google may delete content across Gmail, Drive and Photos.

For a student, that could mean a missed admission email, job reply or university notice. You would never know someone sent it. Google does not delete your existing files straight away. But your account stops working for anything new until you clear space or pay.

Should You Cancel Now or Later?

Two safe ways to handle the renewal

For regular Google One plans, Google says your benefits last until the end of the billing period after you cancel. The student offer terms are more cautious: they say your membership may stay active until the offer ends. That word “may” is not a guarantee, so there are two sensible approaches.

Cancel right after signing upSet a reminder, cancel later

If you choose the reminder route, set two: one a month before the end date and one a week before.

How to Cancel Google AI Plus

These are the steps from Google’s AI Plus help page. Menu names can change slightly between updates.

On a computer

  1. Go to Google One and sign in with the account that has the offer.
  2. At the top right, open Settings, then Manage membership.
  3. Choose Cancel membership and confirm.
  4. Wait for the message confirming that your subscription has ended.

From the Gemini app or website

  1. Open Gemini and tap your profile picture.
  2. Choose Manage subscriptions. This opens your Google One settings.
  3. Under the cancel option, tap Cancel membership and follow the prompts.

Uninstalling the Gemini app does not cancel your subscription. Only cancelling it in your account does.

A Simple Plan to Keep It Free

  • Screenshot your end date on the day you sign up and set two calendar reminders.
  • Keep your storage under 15 GB if you do not plan to pay. Use the extra space for working files, not as the only copy of anything important.
  • Download important files to your laptop or phone a few weeks before the year ends.
  • Use the account you will keep after graduating, not one your university may close.
  • Check your subscription page once after cancelling to confirm that auto-renewal is off.

Is Free Gemini Worth It for Pakistani Students?

For most Pakistani students, free Gemini is worth claiming — as long as you go in with a plan. Higher Gemini limits help with research and revision. Google has also added new study features to its notebook tools, including lecture recording, quizzes and flashcards. If flashcards are part of how you revise, our comparison of Anki and Quizlet shows how dedicated flashcard apps compare. Our guide to the best AI tools for students covers free alternatives if you decide not to keep the plan.

The offer is genuinely useful. It only goes wrong in two ways: a forgotten renewal, or a full inbox a year from now.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is free Gemini for Pakistani students really free?

Yes, for one year. Pakistan is not on Google’s list of excluded countries. Eligible university students can claim Google AI Plus until 31 December 2026. After the free year, it becomes a paid subscription unless you cancel.

Why does Google ask for a payment method if it is free?

Because the offer turns into a paid plan when the year ends, and Google charges that payment method. You pay nothing during the free year itself.

What happens if I forget to cancel?

Google charges you the standard monthly price for your country every month until you cancel. Cancelling stops future charges. But Google says storage plan purchases are non-refundable in most countries, so a charge that has already gone through is unlikely to come back.

Will I lose my files when the offer ends?

Not immediately. If you are over the free 15 GB, you cannot add anything new and Gmail cannot send or receive mail. Google may delete content only if you stay over the limit for two years.

Is this the same as the free Google AI Pro offer?

No. Google announced the AI Pro offer for Pakistan in October 2025, and reports say it has largely closed. The current offer is for Google AI Plus, a different plan with its own features and storage.

Can I use my university email account?

Google requires a personal Google account for AI Plus. That also protects you: university accounts are often closed after graduation, which could take your files with them.

What if my student verification fails?

Google’s help page points verification problems to SheerID’s FAQ. Upload a clear, current document that shows your name, your university and the present term, then try again.

Can I use a Pakistani debit card?

It depends on your bank. Some Pakistani debit cards need international online payments switched on in the bank’s app before they work with Google. If Google declines your card, check that setting or ask your bank.
